Ducati: 'Frightening' Stoner wasn't on the limit
Casey Stoner has given the Australian fans more home MotoGP victories than any other rider in history, after claiming his fourth Phillip Island win in a row on Sunday.
Starting from pole, the 2007 world champion was never threatened - charging to a lead of over two seconds within two laps, then winning by 8.6sec from new world champion Jorge Lorenzo at the chequered flag.
The victory completes a perfect home run for Stoner, who has been victorious in all four Ducati appearances at 'The Island'.
Indeed, Stoner has led every MotoGP race lap but one at Phillip Island since 2007! Stoner will move to Honda next year.
"This feels really nice. I think when I won two in a row here nobody expected me to make it three but having done that I felt there was a lot of expectation on me today," said Stoner, who has won three out of the last four races (he crashed last weekend at Sepang).
"To be fair we have been going for the win at the last four races - unfortunately I slipped off on the first lap at Sepang but we've made up for that this weekend. Everything has gone well for us, we have been happy with the bike from the first practice and the support from the fans has been fantastic.
"I have to admit that before the race I was feeling the pressure, I was more nervous than I normally am but maybe I should be like that more often because I didn't make mistakes!
"I am really happy with the way I rode today but every single person in the team has done a great job this weekend so my thanks go to them and I hope we can keep it going to the end of the season.â€
Team manager Vito Guareschi warned Stoner could have won by a much greater margin.
“Casey was simply incredible this weekend," said the Italian. "He was fast from the start here in practice, he took pole position, set an unbelievable pace in warm-up and then produced a frightening race.
"We don't know where his true limit was today because I think if he needed to he could have won by an even bigger margin."
Five time 500cc world champion Mick Doohan won the Australian Grand Prix three times, although Italian Valentino Rossi has won in Australia five times in the premier-class.
Rossi, who will replace Stoner at Ducati, finished the race in third.
