Marc Márquez’s phenomenal season continued on Sunday at Phillip Island as the 17 year-old took his ninth win of the season. Starting from pole position for the 11th time this year the Red Bull Ajo Motorsport rider crossed the line just over six seconds clear of title rivals Pol Espargaró and Nico Terol, as he opened up a 12-point lead over the latter in the Championship standings.

“This weekend I’ve made a small step but we need to remain very focused because there are still two races to go and Nico is 12 points behind me and Pol 17,” said Márquez. “The final two races in Portugal and Valencia will be very hard, but for now we are happy with the result here in Australia because we had a very good weekend.”

He continued: “It was very difficult with the conditions which changed a lot but in the end the race was dry and maybe the setting was not the best, we didn’t have time to find a good set-up. But in the race I had a very good feeling with the bike. The last few laps were very hard because the wind started to get a bit stronger. Anyway, we’re delighted with this victory and now we’ll think about Portugal.”

The final two races at Estoril and Valencia will decide the 2010 title with the three-way battle between Márquez, Terol and Espargaró set to reach its climax.

“I like Portugal and I was fast there last year,” said Márquez. “I crashed in the race but was in second so we will see… sure with this bike it will be different. In Portugal the conditions are also difficult because the weather there changes a lot, so I think we need to go there in a focused mood and keep the same mentality as we have now.”

Márquez’s win also sealed the 125cc Constructors Title for Derbi, the manufacturer’s first in 22 years, and he added: “Derbi is a Spanish manufacturer and for me as a Spanish rider I’m very happy for them. Now I just want to achieve the Riders Title!”
