Andrea Dovizioso’s first premier class pole position, Valentino Rossi’s first front-row start since Le Mans, Jorge Lorenzo’s first time off the front line of the starting grid this season â€" there was plenty to talk about after qualifying for the Grand Prix of Japan on Saturday and motogp.com commentator Gavin Emmett gave his reaction and thoughts on how Sunday’s race could go following the session.

“The surprise is that there is no Lorenzo on that front row. It’s really interesting that he has missed out, but he should be there when it comes to the race,” said Gavin. “Casey Stoner said he found something towards the end so it will be interesting to see how that evolves during warm up tomorrow. Valentino Rossi, I think he always thought he had a chance of getting pole here, after the bike came out of the box well this weekend. It looks like that new engine has some finer tuning to it and has the step they needed â€" the pace on the back straight is up there with all the other riders.”

“With Dani Pedrosa out Andrea Dovizioso is carrying the Honda flag and he’s done the best thing possible for him, for the team and for all sorts of reasons. So congratulations to him. He should be fighting up there because he usually struggles in qualifying and brings his ‘A’ game come the race, so if he can do that tomorrow then we should have a good race on our hands.”

Colin Edwards and Ben Spies joined Lorenzo on the second row, and Gavin added: “I hope Colin Edwards has a good race having only finished as high as seventh this year, so it would be good to see him up there. I’m also hoping for something further back from the Suzuki riders, top six would be great for them.”
