The Grand Prix of Japan provided another step towards the climax of the 2010 MotoGP World Championship in all three categories, with important developments in the race for each title and more than a fair helping of riveting action.

A huge moment in the weekend came in the first practice session, when a crash for Dani Pedrosa - the only rider who can prevent Jorge Lorenzo from claiming the 2010 premier class title - resulted in a fractured collarbone for the Repsol Honda rider, thus ruling him out of the race and placing his participation in the following round in Malaysia in doubt.

After Valentino Rossi was on the pace in the first practice, the second session was led by his Fiat Yamaha team-mate Lorenzo. Stepping up in qualifying was Andrea Dovizioso, who secured his first premier class pole position.

When race day arrived there was time for reflection before the 125cc contest as Shoya Tomizawa was honoured in a special ceremony at what would have been his home GP. Shoya’s parents received the Michel Metraux Trophy and a book packed full of messages of support from MotoGP fans around the world, as well as a special plaque bearing his number 48 which has been retired from the World Championship in his honour.

Shortly after that the 125cc bikes lined up on the grid and it was Marc Márquez who triumphed, for the seventh time this season. Fellow Spaniard Toni Elías also took his seventh win of 2010 with success in the Moto2 class and placed himself on the verge of claiming the inaugural title in the process.

Having taken his first win of the season in the previous round Casey Stoner made it back-to-back victories by triumphing in the MotoGP race, ahead of pole man Dovizioso and Rossi, who had engaged in an edge-of-the-seat battle with Lorenzo for the final podium spot.

Giving their reactions to another enthralling round of the campaign in the traditional official post-race press conference were all three podium finishers.

Meanwhile the Paddock Girls were present throughout the weekend as usual, and the OnBoard cameras caught all the action from the hair-raising perspective of the riders.
